Three Day Service Dog Certification Test
DAY 1
Testing Objectives

Loading and Unloading from Vehicle

Mall Entry and behavior while inside

Food Court/ Store Conduct

Obedience/ Temperament /Inquiry on tasks the SD performs

Tester brings dog
Deduct 2 points for any refusal task, leaving a down or stay. Deduct 1 point for any other infraction stated on the test (except – aggression or fear is an automatic failure)
Test to take up to 4 hours to confirm not only achieving all requirements and consistency but also, to provide opportunity for Tester to witness the SD performing trained tasks needed by the Handler.
TASK
Part 1 - Vehicle and Mall Entrance
1. From starting point (office) loading dog into vehicle
2. At destination (mall) unloading dog from vehicle
3. Dog walking to mall entry and entry behavior
4. Check in at Customer Service Desk – dog sitting
5. Move to center of court area and perform 2-minute sit and down stay
6. Discussion:
a. Where does the dog sleep?
b. Do you take the SD to a dog park?
c. What do you feed your dog and how do you feed your dog?
Part 2 - Mall - Busy Area
1. Walk to area that has children and do a down and stay
2. Have team go into a nearby store – down and stay, handler to walk away 3-6 ft
3. Team to walk into different area of mall and down stay
Part 3 – Mall – Quiet Area
1. In area of mall with minimal population – obedience checks
2. Down and stay with food in front for 5 minutes
3. Have tester take food away – (Auto Fail if aggressive/defensive)
Part 4 – Mall Quiet Area
1. Walk to seated area and have a discussion
2. Ask legal requirements for entry
3. Can a Service Dog be asked to leave a public place?
4. Where can’t a Service Dog go?
5. What can people ask about your Service Dog for entry?
6. What if someone does not allow entry
Part 5 – Food Court
1. Walk to food court – order food and be seated
2. Dog placed in safe place
3. Put food on the floor in front for 5 minutes while you eat/drink
4. Put away litter and leave food court area
Part 6 – Mall Store
1. Walk to bookstore and have team do a down and stay, handler to walk in and pretend to shop. Dog must stay in place.
2. Leave bookstore and stand in mall, walk away and wait 10 minutes with dog in down stay.
3. Tester approaches and pats (Auto Fail if aggressive/ defensive)
End of Day 1 Team Testing
DAY 2

TASK
Part 1 – Pet Store
1. Enter store and walk to bird area and sit and stay.
2. Go to toy isle – distract/squeaky toy – down stay Food/Treat Isle – distract/food/chews
3.Ask employee to pat and hug dog (Auto Fail if aggression)
Part 2 – Hardware Store
1. Enter store walk near carts/skid steer
2.Down and Stay in busy area
3.Do obedience – sit, down, stay, up, come, etc.
Part 3 – Grocery Store
1. Enter Store and have team use cart
2.Move through all parts of the store, look for
pulling/sniffing/distractions
3. Payment and Payment Line
Part 4 – Restaurant
1. Waiting in Lobby/walk to table/avoid people
2. Placement – Down and Stay for duration/food avoidance
DAY 3

TASK
Part 1 – Mall
1. Slow walk-through mall
2. Fast walk-through mall
3. Use stairs
4. Use elevator
5. Go to Shopper/Drug Store – do down and stay with food andanother dog. 5-minute
6. Go into department store and navigate displays, down and stay
7. Walk to seating area in a very visible and populated public area and wait for public to approach – watch for reactivity and how team reacts/manages public interaction
8. Walk down a busy street (SD should be accustomed to thevarious noises associated with populated areas.)
9. If transit (buses or sky train) is used commonly by the team, this must be included in the test.
Part 2 – Tim Hortons / Coffee Shop
1. Tim Hortons/Coffee shop – line up, avoid people and food, sit and stay for 5 minutes
proper dog placement and have coffee with food in front of the dog
